SAKAMOTO DAYS I finally caught up with the story after months of taking it slow. Review : The problem with Sakamoto Days is the same as the rest of its contemporaries ; not giving itself enough room to breathe. While I understand & appreciate the nature of the battle shonen genre, I refuse to accommodate the notion that there has to be a bit of action in every chapter for the story to be able to capture the reader's interest in the long term. Some of the pioneers never did that so why should the new gen? Why has it become a norm? When did we normalize such a form of storytelling? Sakamoto Days brazenly takes the backseat when it comes to properly exploring the characters & dilly dally around the very themes it sets out to tackle with misplaced humor that robs almost every scene of seriousness & gravity of the assassin business, thereby making key moments somewhat forgettable. But credit where credit is due, action sequences are extremely well done. If a character is getting punched on a page, you can feel the impact wafting over you like a shockwave. The panels are artistic and the author doesn't miss a beat when it comes to harnessing the double page spreads to drive the point home. If you're the type to enjoy back to back action, this is right up your alley. 7/10 🌟🌟

I love Sakamoto Days!!! The conclusion of the Past arc rolls beautifully into the start of the Thailand arc and I am so hyped for the group in focus here🔥 each volume adds more and more layers to this fascinating plot so many excellent characters with unique motives

I’ve been thinking about the artwork. I don’t think it’s awful but I’m not like awestruck by it either. I think it’s about average? Maybe? Idk. I like the character designs a lot. I like the single page art. I think what makes this fun is the personalities.

so sakamoto seems to have come to terms with rion’s death, but nagumo is determined to dig deeper?? i hope she’s alive but if she is it looks like she’s an enemy

"I don't understand what he's talking about. Does that make me stupid?" With this, I have caught up to the current volume releases in Japan. Yay! I read this one too soon after the previous volume so I don't remember if the flashback arc ended here or there. I think here. Anyway, the arc was good, but it was kinda just wheel-spinning. It doesn't teach us anything too new about Slur other than a) he didn't like killing and b) Rion seemed to teach him to fight for his friends. This leads into the intro of two to four new members of Slur's group ("to four" because we see two, and two more are alluded to, but don't yet make appearances). The most important thing is that Rion is assumed to be secretly alive, which isn't really something we needed the flashback for, but whatever. It's a balance between "this doesn't add anything to the Whole" but "it's good on its own," which is okay for a manga arc. I mean, I judge other manga more harshly for having seemingly disconnected arcs, but my favorite manga is Dragon Ball in which Buu has nothing to do with Freeza or Cell. So.... I forgot to mention last volume, but the reason Sakamoto, Nagumo, and Rion were "punished" by being sent on the mission for The Order was apparently because they reveal themselves to civilians too much. But then they spent the entire rest of the arc going wild in public. I mention it here because the same thing is happening now that we're back in the present. Well, it's been happening the entire manga, honestly. This was partly true with Rion and it's true with the new woman Kumanori as well: Suzuki-sensei has something like an Akutami-esque art-style that strongly favors male characters. So Rion is kinda hot, but restricted to the sausage-fest-y way Suzuki draws women. Kumanori reminds me a lot of the chick in JJK who can pull the sky around her body; she's hotter than many other women in the manga, but would definitely look way better if drawn by Oda / Horikoshi / Tabata. It's way funny how dudes on MangaPlus would say they want women to step on them, then Kumanori's entrance to the battle against Heisuke and Hyo has her landing on a dude and crushing him into a bloody mess.

I really appreciate the backstory that we are getting in the flashback arc. In this volume, we finish up that arc, which provides more information about Slur and his connection to Sakamoto, Nagumo, and Akira's aunt. It provides some more questions that I cannot wait to have answered. The story then shifts into a new arc with our protagonists fully going after Slur. We also get introduced to some more of Slur's group. I appreciate the variety of characters in this story and how each one uses a unique technique to fight.
